Invisalign Q & A

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign is a series of removable aligner trays that are custom made to fit snugly over your teeth. Each set of clear aligners shifts your teeth gradually until your teeth move into the desired position. Invisalign is an alternative to traditional metal braces, is less noticeable, and more comfortable to wear. Many adults who need braces, but don’t want a mouth full of wire and metal, like the versatility and convenience of Invisalign orthodontics because they can often achieve the desired results in less time.

Invisalign is made from a hard, clear, BPA-free plastic, so it’s safe to wear and is especially good for men and women with metal allergies. You can also remove the trays to brush your teeth, or for special occasions.

What can I expect at my Invisalign appointment?

At your initial consultation, Dr. Fait and the Southern California General & Cosmetic Dentistry team explain the Invisalign process and answer all of your questions. Dr. Fait speaks with you and examines your teeth to determine if Invisalign is the best orthodontic option for you. He may also cover the following:

  • Dental X-rays
  • Soft tissue oral exam and cancer screening
  • Types of problems Invisalign corrects
  • Discussion of expectations and desired treatment results
  • Discussion of time involved for Invisalign to work

Based on the results you wish to achieve, and if you are a good candidate, Dr. Fait creates a customized treatment plan that shows how he expects your teeth to adjust with the Invisalign system. Once you have your aligners, you wear them 20-22 hours each day. You’ll most likely have a dental checkup every six weeks to evaluate your progress.

Invisalign can potentially fix gaps, overbites, and crowded teeth. Everyone is different, but most of the time, the entire process lasts about 13 months. On average, that is 50% less time than traditional braces!

Is Invisalign the only alternative to metal braces?

Invisalign is one alternative to traditional metal braces. Dr. Fait also offers Six Month Smiles® clear braces. Six Month Smiles is a short-term orthodontic system that uses clear brackets and tooth-colored wires instead of metal. This option helps men and women achieve straighter teeth in about six months.

Six Month Smiles is typically more comfortable than metal braces because they apply less pressure to your teeth, and you wear them for just six months. They’re often less expensive than traditional braces or clear aligners for improving the overall function and appearance of your teeth.

If you want to know if you are a good candidate for Invisalign or Six Month Smiles, call the office, or schedule a consultation online.
